Esports World Cup: A Guide for Filipino Esports Fans

Connecting esports communities, competitive players, and organizations in one major event, the Esports World Cup allows local esports fans to watch their favorite teams compete in different game titles and genres. Keep reading to learn more.

What Is the Esports World Cup?

The Esports World Cup (EWC) brings together elite teams across nations to compete in multiple game titles (and genres).

It’s also become a platform for esports organizations, publishers, teams, and, most importantly, players. They can test themselves against the world’s best esports competitors!

Esports World Cup Overview

esports world cup overview

It’s an international esports event where professional clubs and players gather to compete in multiple games.

This year’s edition features 200 professional clubs from more than 100 countries (2000 players), 25 tournaments, and 24 esports titles.

Players and teams compete in qualifiers, regional competitions, and rankings before making it to the Esports World Cup tournaments.

* Players and teams earn spots through “ROAD to EWC”:  partner circuits, global leaderboards, or in-game elite cups, based on the publisher’s ecosystem.

Then, at the EWC, organizations must compete in multiple game titles (fighting games, FPS, MOBAs) to earn points based on placements.

Each game will have its own format (a specialized tournament bracket, including group stages ultimately leading to the playoffs).

The organization that emerges victorious across eligible games will earn the “Club Championship.”

[To claim the “Club Championship” title and bonus rewards, the top organization must first earn strong placements and win at least one individual event.]

Why Is the Esports World Cup Important?

The Esports World Cup allows international esports organizations to compete against other elite teams/players – a global platform to showcase their depth and skills beyond local competitions.

This event gives organizations a chance to earn global recognition as one of the most elite in esports.

And not to forget, leading the race to the top and winning the Club Championship raises their team standing and profile, ultimately attracting more supporters.

How Does the Esports World Cup Work?

After learning about the importance of the EWC for players, organizations, publishers, and fans in general, let’s talk about how it works.

It’s a multi-game format, although each game has its own tournament. This only means that a League of Legends tournament will have its own rules, including in the playoffs, from other competitions, such as DOTA 2.

It also means that participating teams must undergo qualification pathways, depending on the publisher’s ecosystem (invitations, ranking systems, regional qualifiers, and other results).

Then, players and teams compete in the EWC and progress through specific stages.

In addition, the EWC recognizes organizations for their overall presence (individual and team achievements), while allowing them to build a reputation in esports.

Esports World Cup Teams & Players

Organizations use analytics, including tracking tools, to spot rising talents, who are sometimes recruited by talent scouts from amateur leagues and local tournaments.

They also try prospects in private matches with their current team members,  allowing them to see their skills (and teamwork). On the other hand, some pay transfer fees (contract buyouts) to acquire players who are signed to other clubs, too.

They also develop junior players with their system, tailored team strategies, and training schedules.

Finally, they run bootcamps where players live and practice to develop teamwork and improve communication for the Esports World Cup and other international competitions.

Esports World Cup Philippines: Meet PT Sports

Formed in January 2026 to build champions, PT Sports is the competitive sports and esports division of PlayTime Entertainment, with a strong focus on supporting professional teams to compete internationally.

Its most recent DOTA 2 campaign backed a Peruvian roster that eventually secured a direct invitation to the Esports World Cup following the team’s performance at the DreamLeague Season 29 in May 2026.

How PT Sports Reached the Esports World Cup

The quintet eliminated group leader Natus Vincere (2-1) and followed it with another important win over BetBoom to secure the TOP 6 spot.

The Peruvian roster’s victory over BetBoom helped them earn ESL Pro Tour points, clearing the leaderboard threshold and ultimately claiming the final (14th) direct invitation at the Esports World Cup DOTA 2 Tournament, representing PT Sports and Smart Sports.

PT Sports & Philippine Esports

PT Sports represents PlayTime’s broader investment effort in sports and esports. It supports individual games, develops professional teams, and provides competitive opportunities – all while establishing its presence in international esports and sporting events.

It also invests in physical venues, including the PlayTime Filoil Centre Arena in San Juan, to host live competitive action. That’s not all, because it extends support for grassroots sponsorships, such as the National Basketball Youth Training Center (NBTC), providing funding and event logistics to nurture young local basketball players.

PT Sports also manages and funds esports teams and young players with potential to compete in tournaments, such as DOTA 2 at the Esports World Cup.

Why the Esports World Cup Matters to Filipino Fans

Esports World Cup gives them another venue to watch players and teams compete for tournament titles in games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.

[Team Liquid won the Mid Season Cup at the EWC 2025 held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (4-1) against the Selangor Red Giants Malaysia.]

Moreover, fans have always been following international esports events, and just recently, a PH-backed organization in DOTA 2.

And with the growing dominance of esports, they can look forward to higher-level competitions.

PT Sports backed an international roster at the Esports World Cup, providing it with organizational support, while competing for a PH-supported banner.

It just shows PlayTime’s investment effort in the international esports scene, connecting fans to an overseas team and showing how PH-based organizations can compete at the EWC and other international competitions.

Why Is Dota 2 Popular in the Philippines?

Filipinos are big Dota 2 fans and have always been a part of local gaming communities (and culture), following players, professional teams, and major esports tournaments.

Moreover, Dota 2’s emphasis on individual skills, strategy, and teamwork makes it appealing to younger audiences, and the Esports World Cup gives them an excellent venue to witness just that.

Finally, PT Sports’ participation in the global DOTA 2 further bridges the connection between EWC  (and esports in general) and Pinoy audiences, while also highlighting how PH entertainment organizations can participate in international esports.
